Q. What does Sharjah Municipality Drainage Department do?

Sharjah Municipality Drainage Department is responsible for Collecting, treating waste water from residential, commercial and industrial areas and later on the treated water is distributed to the city for irrigation purposes.

Q. What is sewage?

Q. What is Effluent Water?

Effluent is treated sewage water. The purpose of sewage treatment is to remove suspended solids, organic matter, nutrients and disease-causing organisms, leaving effluent that is suitable for discharge back into the environment (mainly for irrigation purpose and part of it is discharged to the sea).

Q. What if I have sewer odor in my house?

Fresh water is the solution, let the fresh water go through all sinks to fill traps inside the house. If the problem still there, check the toilet and make sure its tightly attached to the floor, the seal around the toilet may be compromised. If this does not work call a plumber immediately. Sewer gas may be harmful if breathed over a period of time.

Q. Where does the sewer water go?

Water sewer is collected from city network through the pump stations around the city and the waste water is pumped in to the main treatment plant. The final product of the treatment process are the effluent water and biosolid sludge. This sludge is taken to Saja industrial area to do the final treatment and used as fertilizer.

Q. What are the benefits of using treated water?

Treated  water has many benefits. Its mainly used for irrigation purpose the extra amount of water is discharged to the sea. Water recycling schemes protect the environment by reducing the discharge of treated effluent the sea.

Q. How reliable is the treatment facility?

Reliability at Sharjah Municipality Drainage Facility is very high. The plant is running  24 hours a day 7 days a week with operators who are able to respond to any situations that arise. Critical treatment processes are designed with redundant equipment, which means that if a mechanical or electrical component fails, a spare is waiting to take its place.
