The new fountain and clock tower has been built in Al Zahra Square in the centre of Sharjah under the direction and guidance of H.H. Dr. Sheik Sultan Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah.

The original clock tower, commissioned by the previous Ruler, the bother of H.H. Dr. Sheik Sultan, was the first monument to be built in Sharjah and became an important focal point for the community and the famous landmark featured on the Sharjah municipality logo.

When the old clock had to be replaced, His Highness the Ruler, encouraged the designer, Spanish architect and sculptor, Carlos Marinas, to retain the spirit and form of the old clock.

The new monument is an octagonal central minaret featuring Islamic arches and columns holding a four faced clock. On the top is a smaller minaret with a dome supported by bronze arches and columns. Around the central element are four decorative petals. The entire monument is placed in the centre of a circular fountain.

The arches of the minaret are made in marble and granite with decorative hand painted ceramics. The dome is covered with golden and coloured tiles.

The clock chamber, made in stainless steel and covered with brown granite, measures 2 x 2 x 2 meters. Each screen has a diameter of 1.5 meters. All the machinery is operated by a master electronic control situated in the base of the minaret.

The four petals around the vertical minaret were casted in concrete on site, each weighing 2500 kilos.

The water feature of the fountain consists of four fan jets following the line of the petals. Four other vertical jets also play in the fountain which is 20 meters across.

The attractive gardens in Al Zahra are 250 x 35 meters.

Two additional fountain have been place at either end of the gardens.

Each fountain features an artistic vase with hand painted ceramic landscapes designed by H.H. Dr. Sultan Al Qasimi. The first represents Sharjah's coast life with dhows, towers and palm trees. The second is concerned with town life in the time of the Ruler's father: the old fort, wind towers and houses.
